Types of SI Joint Injections

To achieve utmost accuracy in determining the pain source, SI Joint Injections are performed tailored to the specific side:

• Left SI Joint: Targeting the left side to ascertain if pain originates from this joint.
• Right SI Joint: Focusing on the right side for the same diagnostic purpose.
• Bilateral: When symptoms suggest both joints may be involved, bilateral injections provide a comprehensive overview.

What happens during the actual procedure?

• You will lie on a procedure table, and the target area will be cleaned and sterilized.
• A local anesthetic will be applied to numb the injection site.
• Using state-of-the-art fluoroscopic equipment for guidance, the physician will carefully insert a needle into or around the facet joint.
• Once the needle is correctly positioned, a mixture of local anesthetic, and sometimes a contrast dye, is administered into the SI joint.
• After the injection, the needle is removed, and the injection site is covered with a small bandage.
• Post-procedure, patients are observed briefly to monitor for any immediate reactions.
